1995 wagon tailgate not staying open
Has anyone else dealt with a 1995 era e320 wagon tailgate struts losing their ability to hold up the tailgate? It is kind of irritating having it land on my head when it is cold out and does not watn to stay up. I do not see any obvious strut to replace. Is there a heavy duty spring buried inside that I can get to to replace? Any work arounds? Doesn't have to be pretty.
Thanks very much, Jim Lee |

Pretty sure there are two gas struts. Very common for them to fail. They aren't terribly expensive nor hard to replace (at least on the older models) so if you use it frequently its probably worth the money to correct it.

They wear out, it's normal. They are replaced by dropping the headliner. Do a search, I believe instructions are in there.

they are not hard to do, but took a bit of time when I did them the first time. Search this site or on-line service manuals for the procedure. I didn't like to mess with the headliner but it went fine. After you do yours you will find that instead of landing on your head, the lift-gate can take your nose off on the way up
