Center console won't unlock 2001 SLK320 )R170)

Just bought a used 2001 SLK320 and the center armrest console won't unlatch. I understand that it is supposed to unlock when the remote unlocks the car, and I can hear the vacuum system working while pressing the remote.

However, it won't unlatch. I've applied downward pressure while unlocking in case it was caught on something, but no luck. I'm about ready to pry it open, but hopefully someone here will have an idea.
