Where is the timing mark on 86 2.3-16????
Hello,
Could someone tell me where axactly is the timing mark on my 86 190E 2.3-16. I spent so much time looking for it perhaps some jumpers need to be bridged before I can see it??? I just failed for emission test today on the HC part. I think I need to advance the timing a bit but it is good to know where I'm starting at before I make a move. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Alex |

The timing pointer on these cars is REALLY hard to see. Here's a picture from my '87 16V:
But, timing isn't adjustable via rotating distributor on these cars. The ECU handles timing...you'll probably need to play with the reference resistor...do a search on this site. |

Thanks Glenn,
That is a beautiful picture you sent there buddy. In desperato, before I see your picture, I advanced the timing a bit by moving the distributor counter clockwise and what a difference it made to the emission, my CO and HC dropped way down and passed comfortablly. I will save this picture for other time. Once again thank you. I will check out the reference resistor you mentioned for future use. Thanks Alex |

Just a thought
Hi Glen,
I noticed that while I was rotating the distributor the RPM of the engine doesn't change significantly as you mentioned about the ECU take care of the timing by compensating it, this seems to be true. However, I believe that the distributor position is essential to the ECU as it calculates how much to compensate. And if the distributor position is at an optimal position then the ECU would be much accurate in its calculations. Just a thought Alex |

By moving the distributor you can cause crossfiring inside the distributor cap. AT TDC you must align the centerline of the rotor with a punch mark on the distributor housing. Cross firing will damage the engine at higher RPM's.
TIMING isn't adjustable on the 16V engine.
