NO 'check engine' light on start-up...WHY??

My 93 300e recently started running like crap (hesitation, terrible gas mileage, stuttering, stalling, etc). Before that she ran very good. While trying to diagnose problem I discovered that the 'check engine' light does NOT work. It does not even light up for three seconds like ALL the other lights on dash assembly. Also discovered that the under hood 16 pin coder does not give off any codes as well(NO blinks whatsoever)......Are these two connected in any way??? So i respectly request this forums collective assistance in getting my 'check engine' light And underhood coder back to operation..... THANKS everyone with advise....

Well first check its not just the bulb gone out. Pull the cluster using a coathanger shaped like an L and switch the bulb with a known working one first before replacing. (I'd recommend replacing them ALL anyway since its out..)

There is a DIY article on this site under resources @ the top.

chance, I would suspect one of the three coils is bad ... probably the rear one (closest to the firewall).

As far as the check engine lamp goes..

IN 1993 there were 2 different versions of emission controls on that car.

1993 federal car has NO check engine lamp

1993 California version does & has push-button & LED blink lamp on 16 pin connector.

THANKS everyone for the imput thus far. I have Not had the opportunity to pull the instrument cluster yet (car is my daily driver) to check bulbs....But I am positive my car is a Calif. version so I DO have a "check engine" light AND 16 pin diagnostic coder. So i'm still lagging in the streets........ Chance

Lagging in the streets??? I'm not entirely sure, but I believe this is actually against the law in 9 southern states, even between consenting adults.
