What is "Lambda Adjustment?"

I have done a thourough search on the topic and saw the info on duty cycles, etc. My question is, what is the lambda adjustment, what does it do, and what is a "duty cycle" My 1990 300E smells like it is running rich even when warm, and I am wondering how to diagnose if it really is. Thanks!

Don

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Seriously, there are a million posts on lambda. What is it? What does it do, and how does it affect my engine. All I know is that its some type of fuel adjustment. Please advise.
