Front caliper types
Initially the brake light on my instument cluster is always on. Upon reading in the manual there are three things that can cause this, 1) parking brake on, 2) low fluid in reseviour 3) an imbalance in pressure from front right to left
I have a reseviour sensor and a sensor at the master cyliner itself 76 300D w115 Upon further investigation under the car I found that I have a 60mm Teves (ATE?) caliper on the right front and A 57mm Teves on the left. The car pulls right on braking. i am assuming this is causing my problems. 1) I will replace one to make them the same as required by the MB manual 2) Is 60 better than 57? 2) do they all use the same pads? I plan to replace lines, pads, cylinder repair kit rotors etc Also my cruise will accel but not hold does this light have any effect on cruise? Thanks |

The imbalance in pressure is from front to rear. If you have the correct master cylinder on the car there is a reset button on the side of the cylinder its self that resets the light on the dash if it is on from an imbalance of pressure from front to rear. Just push th plunger on the switch back in to reset the circuit. Check fluid level in master cylinder if it is not low, remove plug in at front portion of master cylinder reservoir (front float assy) if light goes out check the float for being disconnected from shaft. Do same thing for rear float on reservoir. As for calipers on front, both sizes of pistons were used, depending on brand. What is important is that both sides are the same size and brand. I would pick out the dry one or the one that looks best, and match it with one for the other side.

Forgot to mention, the light will not cause the cruise control to malfunction, sounds like a cruise control amplifier to me. Also all the brake pads are the same for the front, regardless of the brand of caliper.

Rob,
Thanks for the info . It answered a lot of the questions. I suspect the caliper was replaced by an unkowledgeable mechanic in the past and will schedule a trip to the salvage for a match. |
