Gas Tank Cleaning?

As part of the work on the 380SL we took the gas tank out....question now is clean it with water and repaint ....or use some phos or the other
acid to clean it....aside from some light trash around the strainer in the
tank it was pretty clean..In the past I used phos acid on a Jag with
good results but that tank had a lot of rust from sitting for 15 yrs...the
SL is driven weekly. Thanks everyone Jim
