400E Aux fans

When I jump the connectors of the temperature switch on my 1992 400E so that the aux fan would come on all the time, the A/C doesn't work.

The moment I remove the jump, the A/C comes on.

Is this normal. On my 300E, I jumped it and had no problems.

Car is not overheating, but with summer coming up, I just wanted the additional cooling to keep the temperatures in check in stop and go traffic.

Also, the aux. fan doesn't come on when the A/C is on - how ever long the A/C runs. Can I jump the pressure switch to get the fan to come on (though it will be at low speed).

Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to jump the switch to keep the fan running on low all the time. The wiring may be undersized for constant operation.

in 1992 when the 400e's came out we had several problems with the aux fans.
ON some cars there wes even a recall for the pre-resistor & wiring.

I would make sure the wiring to that resistor isn't melted!

That is why they installed a strip fuse on the firewall just like the blower motor fuse on the drivers strut mount, and why they are outside the fuse box (as listed on the fuse location card/box)

Thanks for the replies.

But, will/should the A/C cut out when the Aux fan comes on at high speed?

A/C shouldnt cut out but when you jumper the leads it reads a short so yes A/C may cut off. If you read the posts on benzworld.org and here about coolharness you should see some of the same issue. Too much or not enough resistance from that sensor and for safety the A/C shuts off.
