w123 door handle removal dilemma

I usually keep pretty much to the Diesel forum, but this is a general question about my W123 (300d). I recently tried to unlock the drivers side door using the ignition key (they are different because of an ignition lock replacement). Now the tumbler in the door lock will not turn. I've tried taking the door handle out to examine the issue, but from what I've read in other threads on this subject it seems that you need to use the key to disengage the lock rod from the inner door. As I stated above I can't turn the door lock. How do I get this handle out without using the key and without damaging anything?

Thanks Guys

So you changed the ignition tumbler from another car? as I understand your explanation. so naturally that key won`t fit the door lock.

what happened to the original key? it should still unlock the door. or Iam not getting what key goes where.

Now, according to the FSM.

If the lock cylinder cannot be turned, unscrew
fastening screws of door lock to remove door grip.
Then pull door grip laterally out of cutout and force
set pin out of turning rod on door grip.

when you open the door, there is a black plastic cover. under it are 2 screws that hold the handle tight.

press door handle forward.

on door handle without safety lock pull grip bracket and remove entire door grip.

on door grip with safety lock insert ignition key into lock cylinder. turn ignition key 50deg to the rear and remove door grip.

Charlie,
Thanks for the reply. I replaced the ignition tumbler with a new OEM one that came with it's own key. The original key still operates the doors, that is until I tried to open the drivers door with the new ignition key. Now the drivers door tumbler will not move. I was told to fix it I needed to remove the door handle assembly. And this is where I'm running into a snag.

Reading your reply I think I know what I need to do. The turning rod is kinda grungie where it attaches to the handle so if I clean it up a bit I may be able to see the set pin of which you speak.
It's worth a shot, thanks again
Doug

The key situation you have seems to be pretty common.

I reeeeeally do not understand why ?

Last time I did this it cost me $20.

The sequence is rather simple:

Ignition locking switch breaks or is breaking
Obtain new cylinder from a dealer or entire assembly from a JY
Take OLD key and NEW parts to a locksmith. Ask him to make them
match.

Seems pretty pointless to fight this situation for $20.

Starting in Sept 81 you need the key to turn it 50 degrees clockwise . . . then pull out the handle . . . I found that there was a machine screw on the back side that the FSM (Factory Service Manual) failed to mention on the removal, but made note and picture on the install later . . .

This is asumming you need to remove the whole handle . . . and also that you have removed the chrome ring around the latch, and the two screws under it . . .
