97 E320 stalling

Car has 6x,xxx miles. Stalls with no warning but keeps running at idle and will not accelerate. Turn off for a minute and starts and runs fine till next time. May happen once a day or once a week. They replaced what my BIL called the control box. On my suggestion after searching this forum replaced the CPS. Got 2 blocks and stalled. This has been going on for about a year, car stays mostly parked. Please help. My sister is at the end of her rope with this car.
Thanks in advance.
Harold

What do you by stall ?

Does it stop completley ? Does it start missing ?

If it randomly cuts out it can be CPS or K40 relay.
If it starts missing it could be MAF.

The reason I ask is because you say it stalls but keeps running at idle. I have never heard of this.

Hi Kiwi

I'm Harold's sister, it's my car that's stalling. I will be going along (anywhere) highway, parking lot...etc and suddenly no response when I hit the gas. I have seconds to get out of the way. Today it was a parking lot. Last time I was on a local bridge. Also, today my husband/ mechanic replaced the CCS. That is why I had the nerve to drive it again.

What is the difference in stall, skipping, missing? Stall seems to be the right word. I get enough power to just pull over. Turn the car off for only seconds then I can go again...so far without it happening again right away.

a stall = engine completely off, Hesitation= give it gas and it dont go, Skipping/missing/misfire = the spark plug system is not working correctly and your only firing on X/6/8 cyl

THat is a weird one.

When you loose power does the engine run rough ?

Could it be fuel starvation ?

What do the others think ?

Have you had the codes read from the ECU ?

Ginny, has your husband/mechanic checked the fuel pump relay (MAS) and the fuel filter for blockage? Agree with Kiwi that it sounds like the fuel system has a blockage that intermittently causes fuel starvation. I don't know what the electrical circuit is like on these post-OVP models, but maybe power to the fuel pumps is another angle to consider.

Thank you all for your help

Marty has replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, MAS has been changed, No overvoltage relay on this car.....He is going to check the codes again now, also, try to find the fuel pump relay....

That's where we are. I bought this car a year and half ago. I haven't put 1000 miles on it, but untold amount of money and aggravation. Thought it was my dream car. I've been driving a diesel for 13 years and wanted a nicer more luxurious ride....NIGHTMARE! Since last August all I've wanted to do is get it fixed right because I'm an honest person (the guy had to know this when he sold it to me, and the other electrical problems I've had) and SELL it. I want to use the money to paint my old RELIABLE 84 diesel and fix it up nice!

No codes on the car, Nothing out of the ordinary in any diagnostics except the readings from the O2 sensors which have been replaced early on because they were failing. The first O2 sensor reading is a little all over the place ie:0.07 then 0.755 then 0.100 then 0.645, where as the 2ns O2 sensor reasd around 0.485 plus or minus 0.020 and this may be normal, I do not know. I have looked a the wiring harness in the top of the engine and it seems OK without peeling it all apart. I'm wondering about the knock sensor but I think the engine would cut off or at least get an error code. Fuel pump relay I still have to find but again diagnostics show no problems with the fuel system. Anybody know where the fuel pump relay is on this car. I haven't seen it under the back seat nor under the hood.

Thanks
Marty

Update
Whilst driving the car and monitoring the O2 sensors, when the problem happens, the engine runs normal but pressing the accelerator seems to do little to make the car go, the engine just sounds like it wants to idle. The 1st O2 sensor reading looks like it drops to 0.000 or 0.005 and the problem happens right regular now. I think I'll replace the 1st O2 sensor and see what happens. Should be under warrantee. Any thoughts apreciated. And still no codes.

Harold

I will try a second hand one this weekend, but a new unit was ordered thursday. Car part store pricing precludes changing the primary O2 sensor quickly since right now it is not a primary vehicle.

My 98 has a throttle position sensor but I'm not sure if the 97 does. Never heard of one failing but it might cause these symptoms. Located on top of left fender just in front of fuse box.

Good luck.

sounds to me like a fuel issue, and possibly the o2 sensors,i would replace the fuel pump relay, and make sure the 02 sensors are up to date,my 89 300ce had a similiar issue,it turned out to be fuel pumps,02 sensor and the ovp, also a electrohydralic actuator for the fuel.maybe even the air fuel ratio needs to be adjusted.good luck
