Turbo swap

Well, I just had a kewl idea and I had to get up and post this to get opinions. I have a 300SD Turbo that is just sitting around taking up a spot in the garage. So, I have this crazy idea of taking the turbo out of it and putting it into the 560 SEL. Is it possible? what mods would I have to make for this to work? Anyone that has an opinion and advice please chime in on this one. Thanks

Turbo as in just the turbo or turbo as in the entire OM617 engine plus transmission?

just the turbo ...lol... an engine and tranie swap is way beyond the scope of the tools and knowledge that I have. Are the headers interchangeable? Can I use the same intercooler?

Well the OM617 is a 5 cylinder so the header would not fit and it does not have an intercooler. If you wanted to turbo your 560, you'd have to either custom fab some exhaust manifolds (twin turbo is usually best option for V8s) or do a rear-mounted turbo design, twins again. It would require quite a bit of custom fabrication, and then you'd have to figure out the fuel delivery with the increased air flow/density. So the short answer is no, considering an engine swap is out of the question with your tool availability. BUT if you have the money/time and willing to learn a lot, anything can be done! I'm not aware of any turbo-retrofit V8 members on here, only turbo I-6s (I am saving up for this myself), except for a member who twin-turbo'ed his 6.9 engine...

A turbo for a diesel is usually framed a *little* smaller because it cannot spin as high and *usually* does not have as much exhaust energy as the flame coming out of the business end of a gasser head. Combine that with the fact that your engine has almost twice the swept volume of the diesel and what do you get? A horribly choked down motor. You'd blow that turbo way off its map and choke your engine down in the meantime. Size the correct size turbo and go for it! An M117 would scream with a little added assistance . Not sure how well V8 CIS would deal with it though.

Yeah...some of the diesel folks are saying to go with a supercharger instead. It was a pretty kewl dream though...lol...oh well....I guess Ole' Blue gets to keep his nuts (HAHAHA!!!). It's probably for the better....he runs fine and gets pretty good mileage, but I never take him out cause the interior is kinda run down...maybe i will save up and have his interior redone someday....thanks for the help guys !!

The T3 off of an OM617 is a good unit but simply too small for 8 cylinders. One on each side would probably work well depending on max boost and spooling preferences. On the M103/104, I wouldn't go any smaller than a T3/T4 for the six cylinders, I imagine a T4 would be the absolute smallest single-turbo you could put on an 8 cylinder and expect any results.

I do know that the twin-turbo M103 kits used twin T-2s or T-25s (you'd find these on Mitsubishi 4G6xs) depending on setup.

Any opinions on a pair of Garret T-3's off of OM 617 engines, fitted to a m117 500SEC?

I have a pair of extras at the moment, and a euro 5 liter car that's been begging for a little attention.
I already have a MegaSquirt computer waiting on the bench for it, pending getting the 300SD (which has the third Garret...) back out of the garage and on the road full time.

I don't know enough about the turbo sizing and the efficiency envelopes yet, nor the diesel to gasser efficiency differences, so I'm not sure how the 3L diesel sized turbos would work in a twin setup, each supporting 2.5L on a gasser.
