Need advise, transmission sounds "loud"
I have a '88 300TE and the transmission works fine but it sounds "loud" like the whirring of an engine. It is definitely louder than my wife's '91. I replaced the K1 valve, filter, and fresh oil so shifting is fine but the noise persists. I'm just not confident in driving it long distance with this noise and am considering buying a rebuilt transmission. Should I run it till it fails or get it fixed now...

Are you sure it's coming from your transmission and not the differential?

Sounds like a noisy front pump. Be sure that your filter is not clogging, other than that a noisy pump might work for a long time.

hmm, it sounds like it's coming from the transmission but the rear end is possible because it leaks oil.
Seems like noise equates to failure or impending failure... I'll try to stethoscope it while driving

Forgot to mention, the engine revs change when the car bounces because I haven't changed my accumulators yet. Does this mean the disks are slipping? I don't feel it but it sounds like it. I'll video tape the sound and post it later...

I had a mechanic look at it, take a test drive and of course it didn't sound too bad. He used a stethoscope and didn't hear anything unusual. You can hear it more at night.
He said it shouldn't be a major problem as long as the transmission is working properly.
