Catalytic converter - 1989 190E 2.6 - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I have searched plenty of threads that point out to several aftermarket units for 190E 2.6's but most of the threads have not been concluded properly. Some have mentioned going to a muffler shop and having theirs done but not much specifics on what they put on and how it has lasted so far.

Looking up items online it seems the 87 to 89 2.6L catalytic converter models had one inlet, and two outlets while the 90 to 93 had single inlet and single outlet pipes on the main catalytic converter bodies.

Somebody mentioned using the Magnaflow 93507 on their 89 190E 2.6, I was wondering how that has been?

Several mechanics point to my car's catalytic converter as having issues but I'm apprehensive of replacing a factory part (I think it is factory) that has lasted this long, with an aftermarket unit that might not last as long. I have thought of using the cat from my sister's wrecked 93 190E 2.6 but as I mentioned above it might be different in terms of piping.

Can anybody recommend a good shop that can sell and install a good (aftermarket most probably) catalytic converter in and around Orange County in California?

I was quoted $1600 for a new MB catalytic converter by my parts guy, but that's out of the question financially!

Has anybody tried Germanstar's catalytic converters? They are around $500 but I have not seen any members posting stories of these being installed and how they turned out. I've emailed Germanstar and I hope to get more info on this as well.

So far the most common are Magnaflow, universal types, like Flowmaster or DEC. Some threads mention Walker (?) too. Are any of these good? Any preference to one over the other? I'd appreciate your input and leads to local shops so I can have the smog test done already (due in 2 weeks).

Has anybody also encountered CEL (check engine light) problems regarding the O2 sensors? My plan is to retain the pre-cats (is that a good idea?) and only replace the main cat with an aftermarket type so I would assume the O2 sensor would remain where it is.
