Vintage Beckman Analyzers.. Anyone know or seen them before?
A while back I snapped up 3 Vintage Beckman Analyzers at Shop clearance sale..
I know they were from the 70's, but thought they looked cool and could be useful. One is a Beckman ICT1560.. Ignition Tester. It has dwell, tach and a timing light. On the right side is a CRT tube where you can see each Cylinder fire and a trace showns.. kinda like a oscilloscope. You can test on 1 thru 8 cylinder vehicles, and kill any cylinder spark individually to test balance etc. I also got 2 HC/CO testers. This one, and a portable one. Both are IR units. I have used the ICT 1560, and it worked good, but dont have any manual or info, and I have no idea how to really use them. A detailed search of the internet gave up little info, but I did find that all of them are "Lab Grade" and the NC/CO tester was quoted in papers and used at EPA labs to test and to set emmisions standards. Just wondered if anyone had ever seen these or something similar, or know how to use them?

Wow! I worked for Beckman in the late seventies as a Field Engineer. They had several divisions, but I never knew they made such instruments. I worked in BioMedical. They are probably well built equipment.

You know Larry, you are a Rockstar!
LOL! Would you laugh if I told you I paid under $20 for all 3? Yes, they are well built! If only I knew how they worked and how to use them!

The ignition analyser is straight forward. There should be a lead to put on the center wire of the distributor cap and a lead to put on the #1 plug. Also there should be leads to hook to the battery. Then play with the buttons while the car idles.

Does the ignition scope work? I have a Sun Ignition scope older than the ones you show. Over time the CRT gets gassy and capacitors age and they stop working.
If it works then it could be quite handy for tuning up point ignition systems. For modern electronic systems they have little use. Modern ignition systems make much more voltage and they are either working or they're not. It sure is neat to have them though. |

When I first got it a 3 years back it worked, but I have moved house twice since then and it was "buried" in the back of my storage until a week ago when I unearthed them again and decided I should try to get more info..
Could not get the CO/NC meter to make any sense, but I do have a manual for that one... seems like it might need to be calibrated with a " Calibration gas"... I need to dig up the manual and read it again. I was thinking it might be useful come smog time to have a idea if there is a problem..

Well, I am a dumbo sometimes...
Look what I found nestling in a folder that I thought was only the manual for the CO/NC Tester... Makes interesting reading... And the cost of this piece of cool equipment in 1983? I also have the service manual, but not the users Manual...

That's about what my hair looked like when I worked for Beckman in the late seventies.
It's been a long time, but I used an ignition scope a good bit back in the point ignition days. My old Sun even has an adapter for a GM HEI, but the scope was just a hard habit to break once we got into electronic ignitions. For an early electronic ignition system with wires it could come in handy from time to time. |

Oh, Hair.... I remember that stuff....
Well, I know it will work on older stuff, and as my "older" stable looks like this currently I think I will keep it and use it! 1973 Chevy K5 Blazer 1973 K10 Pickup 1974 Alfa Spider 2000... x 2! 1977 Dodge B300 Stretched Van Conversion 4x6 1984 Mercedes 190D 1984 Airstream 345 LE Motorhome 1987 Chevy Suburban R20 454

That is so cool!! If you needed the money, you might be able to make quite a bit on ebay depending on its rarity.

Oh, I need the money being in the ranks of the unemployed right now, but I will sell some cars first!
To think this thing cost as much as some cars when it was new! I have searched it and the other Beckman stuff on the net, and come up blank. I would love to get hold of the owners manual..
