W124 Glove Box
I can't open the glove box on my 300E. I only obtained one key with the car, the key with the red dot and it locks and unlocks everything, except the glove box. The key turns the lock nice and easy, but it doesn't do anything. It seems that when I got the car now 2 and half years ago, the box would open. Then some time back I tried to open it without success. So I am looking for ideas on getting it open with damaging it or the dash.

the door opens with a couple of plastic cogs, perhaps one is chipped or worn?
if you can slide a flathead screwdriver into the top you might be able to unclip the lock, then once its open take out the door panel with all the attached screws and assess whats going wrong. hope that helps.

you got the valet key...it won't lock/unlock the trunk or the glove box
take your vin, registration and an id to a dealership...they will order you a new key..

Best option is going to the dealer and getting another key. I can't think of any other way of accessing the rear of it. You can't remove the lower panel because there are screws hidden by the glovebox...No other way around it.

The red-dot key is the master key, not the valet key. If that key works the trunk lock it is the master. I would think the valet key either wouldn't go into, or turn the glove box lock. It sounds like the latch is broken.

Red dot indicates alarm, rectangular key-top indicates master.
An oval key-top is the original valet key. Originally it had two rectangular masters, one oval valet, and one without a top (wallet). If all else fails, destroy/drill whatever the glovebox door, they are not hard to find (depending on color). Destroying the dash is a bigger problem.

I can't remember, it's been a while since I had a new car of that vintage, but it seems that the Valet key arms/disarms the alarm also.
My valet key and wallet key pretty much stayed in the spare key box for the entire life of the car, as did the original key wallet.

I think I will drill it
The key is the rectangular "Red Dot" and it opens everything. I have been thinking along the line of drilling out the lock and getting another door, but then the hope that another key might solve the problem sounded good. I am going to get another set of keys also.

Glove box lock/handle
If you decide to drill out the lock, you do not have to get another door. Once the glove box door is open, remove three phillips screws that secure the lock/handle. All you need to do is replace just the lock/handle.
If you have time, take a look at my listing item #400151842665 on Ebay for a W124 glove box handle w/ key. Apparantly the car I got this from was stolen. The yahoo's that took the car messed up both door locks and the ignition. Then the recycle yard punched the trunk lock to take out the gas tank. |
