BROKEN KEY - how to turn to position #1
please help...
i have my key broke inside the thumbler, and i think its not in pos #1. the steering is lock, can't turn to left but it can turn freely to the right. i have read the post about ignition cilynder removal, but i still confuse how to turn the the ignition to pos #1 when there is nothig to hold. do i have to use square screwdriver and turn it to pos #1 with key inside with forced ? (i'm sure big power of your hand will be used for it) so i can put the DIY "u" shape into the 2holes to get the tumbler and the megagodzilla collar.

position 1 will light up the idiot lights.... if you can't get it there you will have to drill it out...

super glue on the end of the key piece you have in your hand. Nice set of tweezers. Don't drill or put grease or oil until everything else has been exhausted.

do not force it unless you have to. Best bet is find a way to get the piece out and use another key.

I just had the same problem, I tried a locksmith first, but he was unable to extract the key.... Next I tried to remove the lock shield with no success.. I suspect, because I was unable to turn the key to position one fully.... I ended up having to cut the lock shield off with a dremell tool. Its a pain in the butt man.. Good luck... but as they stated before, take your time do not force it. That will only make things worse. My new tumbler and ignition lock shield should be delivered today. Currently I am driving around with a disassembled dash and using a screw driver to start the car!

I have a 1991 300CE not sure how similar it is your model but it should be really closes to the same design.. ok....if you drill it out, be sure to keep the bit in the tumbler and don't stray out into the housing. No need to ground the black shroud....just the tumbler.
 notice the square piece on the top of the tumbler. That has to recede in order to unscrew the shroud. If you drill small holes into the rim of the tumbler and FIND that hole, you can stick a stout paperclip in there, recede the square and unscrew the shroud and remove the tumbler. this is the way I would try and do it next.

|
If they key broke because of excess twisting force, you might want to consider just removing the steering column entirely and removing the lock housing from the upper jacket and replacing it all including the ignition switch electrical portion. (that would include the lock housing and lock cylinder)

thanks for all the replay my friends....
the condition now is...... i think the key is in the pos#1, streering is unlock and all lights are on. i've been trying use the u shape tool to release the black collar and tumbler. i made u shape tool with bike spoke & wire hanger. it fits inside the two holes. i can fell the upper hole get trough something and it make me happy, but the bottom one just go along and only 1 small click sound. shaking, vibrating and all staff that related to that matter have been done, but still the black collar and the tumbler wont come up... please help.... what else should be done to remove the tumbler

A bike spoke may be a bit too thick, check the pdf file and measure it if you can. If it is okay, try getting a good sharp 45 degree angle on the cut. The U-tool has to act like a wedge and slide the clips back.
If your key is now stuck in the #1 position, you may want to disconnect your battery.
