I just did the fuel filter on my 91 300E 2.6. It has a chassis # that splits on the early side of a change in the style of the fuel hose that feeds the filter from the tank, but when I took off the cover I saw mine had the later style.
The earlier type goes from the nipple on the fuel tank straight to the filter inlet. The later hose screws into the nipple, runs down over top of the fuel pump assembly, around the front of the filter, and then back again along the underside of the filter where it connects to the inlet with a hooked steel pipe.
It appears the one on it was the original hose. I went ahead and used the new type I had already bought since I couldn't see any reason that it wouldn't work just fine. But it's been bugging me. Why would they design something as convoluted as that "wrap around" deal if there wasn't a good reason for it?
What am I missing? Should I have used the original type?
