Its Epoxy Paint, by Rustoleum. Tan basecoat with multicoloured flakes sprinkled over, then clearcoated with antislip additive. About $250 to do my 2 car garage. Yes, its much cleaner, and brighter to work in and clean up after! |
I did this on my 190 last year as well. The car was wandering all over the road. I replaced the links first. Huge improvement. Still a bit of a wander. I jacked her up and saw that the bushings on the lower control arm carrier thing (the big bottom link that holds the base of the spring). I pulled that off and had to use a special tool to push out the old bushing and push in the new one. The rear end is solid as a rock.
I suspect I will be doing the same on the E300 soon given that it is 16 yrs old now. |
I just ordered two rear shocks and two new front struts for my 300E.
(Bilstein HDs) I might as well do the rear links while I am at it. Do the rear springs need to come out to change these links? I believe it is the shock that holds lower control arm in place which in turn keeps the spring in place... just wondering though. Also, if you front end seems to be sitting lower than stock, it that a fault of your failed struts or tired front springs? |
Rear springs don't need to be removed to service anything other than the LCA or removing the subframe (124).
If the front is low, check the bottom of your front springs. I have found more of them broken in the last coil than un-broken, and it will lower the car somewhat. Weak springs can also sag, as can compressed spring pads, in TX the rubber parts are always the first thing to check IMO. New front struts might also lift the front slightly, they did mine. Probably the difference between old struts with very little gas pressure to new struts with original gas pressure. Honestly though, if the front springs are otherwise good and the front has dropped an inch or less, it's about the height of the later 124s and I'd keep it that way, ... maybe lower the rear to match. |
Just want to clarify a couple points about highway wandering. Getting ready to throw parts at the car when I get paid Friday. When on the highway ~80 or above, when it rains, or the slightest cross wind I'm getting wander. Bad enough that it's like the car is changing lanes on it's own. But, it feels like the steering gets lighter and the front end wanders. I've had it in the air and everything feels pretty tight. And this condition started after I had the rear subframe swapped when the wheel fell off. So are y'all feeling your wander in front of the car as well?

not me.
that sounds like alignment issues to me. |
I replaced all the worn bushings on the rear of my 190D and I still had crosswind issues. A couple of weeks ago I replaced my front control arms and they made a HUGE difference even though the bushings were there they were pretty soft. I would say it is 80-90% better.
