You might try some switch cleaner first. They reside at the top there, and can get dirty easier. Not to expensive at the auto parts house.

Not too bad, usually the door panel can stay in place. The small "knobs" that look like the seat cushions (that you move to make the seat move) pull off. One one of them (the one to move the entire seat fore/aft) there is a plastic C clip you take off, then the cover over the switch can be taken off. After that there are a couple screws you can barely see on 2 corners of the switch, you remove those and the switch should come out of the hole in the door panel. I might be able to post a copy of the work instructions if you think you want to try it sometime.

I believe I've got some electrical contact cleaner in my garage...

I have to eat a little crow here guys! (When I had previously messed with this issue, it must have been that there was just enough ambient noise that I couldn't hear the motor running thus assuming they weren't!)

Early in this thread I was asked if I can hear them running, I replied "No". Well....a little while ago I went out to the ::QUIET:: garage and manipulated the headrest button and to my 'HORROR' - I could hear the motor running!

This was the case on both headrests.

Sounds like they are off track or the link that moves them up/down is broken/separated. No?

There are some little plastic things in there that have a tendency to break on the headrests. On the passenger side of my 300e it wouldn't work. They took the panel off & glued it, and I never had any trouble after that. You might just be off of track too! Probably want to check that first.

Right, just take off the cover on the rear of the seat and look it over, might need a helper to run the headrest switch while you look. IIRC the motor is under the seat, a metal cable inside a plastic outer sheath spins and makes the headrest move.

I'll search here for a thread I came across a while ago about removing the back of the seat. Seems there were some issues and challenges I need to be aware of. Don't want to tear the upholstery
