2000 Steering wheel on 1991?

Hi All,

I have a 1991 SL that I have owned for 16 years, 215K miles and am slowly updating as it still runs and looks great. I recently bought a wood and leather steering wheel and airbag from a 2000 model and went to install it this weekend.

What I found was that my horns and other parts apparently are not compatible with the internals of the new wheel due to size but my main question deals with the SRS connection. On mine, my wires for the horn and airbag terminate in a brass hole within the steering wheel with no wires to connect to / through the steering column. All that I can see on mine is that my wheel looks like there are circular brass openings which may just "sit" in the steering column shaft and make contact? Does that make sense?

Does anyone know if you can get a 2000 model wheel to work on a 1991 SL?
Thanks....David

Just speculating here....

The 91 R129 wheel is similar to the W124, R107 and w201 wheel with the airbag. This is the larger wheel that is current from 86 through the early nineties.

For the W124 wheels, the clockspring, which is the wiper that the wheel contacts hit on the steering column, varies wrt the particular wheel being used.

You can update later wheels if you also use the appropriate mating system on the column.

If you just have the wheel, it's pretty likely you will not get a "mate" with your current column clockspring. You'll also need to get the mating part for the newer wheel and verify that it will mount on your existing column. Whether the clockspring will mount to the column, is something you need to discover.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply. It appears that my wheel has "brass slip rings" that make contact to the steering column whereas the new wheel does not have these "rings" around the hole for the hub / column.

I mounted the new wheel and it mounts perfectly and turns the wheel perfectly but I am getting an SRS bulb lit due to no electrical connection for it. It also looks like my horns are spring loaded so I will have to see if I can mount them into the new wheel as well.

Would you know if I could somehow reuse my "brass rings" by swapping them from my old wheel to the new wheel and how to accomplish that? I am pretty certain I can swap and modify / mount my horns.

Thanks...David

I'm not sure where the break is...

But, I think you need the slip ring which went with the 2001 wheel not the 1991. If you dig around several ppl with 500e's are putting later fancier wheels on their cars.

The later W124 wheels are smaller in diameter than the early wheels and use a different airbag.

Externally, 93 wheel appears to be a direct swap for the 94-95 wheel.

When I installed the 93 wheel on my 94 cabriolet, I had to swap over the "innards" of the wheel to match the column. Additional work with a drillpress was also required as the center casting openings were different. Mounting holes all lined up (which was good!)....

I suspect you will need to get both sides of the connection, and my experience with the W124 suggests that it's do-able.

New "clock Spring" as an option?

As previoulsy mentioned, the current wheel on my '91 SL has brass rings around the female hub opening that appears to operate by making contact with a steel plate on my steering column hub.

The new wheel I have does not use the same rings. So I am wondering if anyone knows if I can remove my steel plate on the steering column and update it with a newer model clock spring plate so that my new wheel will mount up correctly....?

Any thoughts?

David
