Well, I cant say it any more..

..which is that my 90 300e has NEVER let me stranded. It just did.

I think I just broke my driveshaft, or if I'm lucky, the rear flex disk. Right in the middle of a turn from a very busy Kingston road..."bang" no forward motion. The car limped on momentum thru the intersection, and then stopped on Dundas. Not where you want to be broken down at rush hour.

To my amazement total stranger car drivers stopped and pedestrians who just happened to be there pushed me all the way home, easily 1 km.

Thank you Torontonians who helped.

Dundas? Canada? I hope it's only a flex disc, and if it was, I'm glad you were not going too fast. there's pictures of a spectacular failure of the forward one on here somewhere. caused a lot of damage

OTTOBUNZ, it's odd that a flex coupling or a driveshaft would fail suddenly without any forewarning signs. Please let us know what happened.

You are correct Ferdman. It's the rear left axle that is just spinning without driving the wheel...I assume it's snapped.

Or could it be something in the hub that broke?

failed CV joint would be my guess. i didn't help push your car, but as a torontonian i'll be glad to accept credit :-) 1km is a good bit of pushing, the 300E is a heavy car, man.

now to make matters worse, the car makes a hideous metallic buzz in park. If you put it in a drivegear (r or n or d) it goes away, put it back in park and this noise starts up. If I hit the gas to raise the idle, the noise speeds up. Also sometimes it wont let me shift into park unless the car engine is off.

it seems to be affected by the shifter movement. any ides?

get the car off the ground securely, wheels free to turn, and look at while it's running. try to get it high enough that you can creep under the car. try running through the gears. this should answer some of the questions at least.

buzz at the shifter could be as simple as the shifter bushings bad, but given that you have lost drive it's likely to be related to whatever is causing the loss of drive.

Come on you guys this isn't rocket science, The left axle has snapped inside the rubber (like it's done about a 120,000 times in the W124). The sound you are hearing from the transmission is the park lock trying to engage. Now before you blow up your transmission reving the engine find a new axle and replace and continue with you're happy motoring.

The most complex systems can fail in the simplest way.
