W126 bouncing speedometer
The speedo in the 91 SE has been steady for the year and a half I've had the car. When I parked today however, it jumped just as I came to a stop. I jammed on the brake again and it jumped again. It didn't jump again after that. I haven't driven it since. The only thing out of the ordinary is that my washer fluid light came on yesterday and I haven't attended to it. It was off when the speedo did its bouncing bit.
I've been hearing a ticking sound from behind the dash that corresponds to vehicle speed. Maybe the cable's going? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE 81 300SD |
bouncing speedometer cable
Sixto......
If you do not get a resonse from a MB technician, you may want to try the following: Try disconnecting the speedo cable housing and removing the flexible drive cable from the housing. Then clean and lubricate the drive cable with lithium grease. Good Luck. |
Be careful, do not use too much grease. Too much will cause excess friction and the cable will break (been there, done that - a long time ago). I just lubed my speedo cable with synthetic dri-slide from an aerosol container. Cable works fine, no noise, and the speedo needle very steady at all speeds.
Good Luck! Tom |
Instend of lithium grease, can you use ATF or use WD-40 to lube the cable?? Thanks
