W126 bouncing speedometer

The speedo in the 91 SE has been steady for the year and a half I've had the car. When I parked today however, it jumped just as I came to a stop. I jammed on the brake again and it jumped again. It didn't jump again after that. I haven't driven it since. The only thing out of the ordinary is that my washer fluid light came on yesterday and I haven't attended to it. It was off when the speedo did its bouncing bit.

I've been hearing a ticking sound from behind the dash that corresponds to vehicle speed. Maybe the cable's going?

Thanks,
Sixto

bouncing speedometer cable

Sixto......

If you do not get a resonse from a MB technician, you may want to try the following:

Try disconnecting the speedo cable housing and removing the flexible drive cable from the housing. Then clean and lubricate the drive cable with lithium grease.

Good Luck.

Be careful, do not use too much grease. Too much will cause excess friction and the cable will break (been there, done that - a long time ago). I just lubed my speedo cable with synthetic dri-slide from an aerosol container. Cable works fine, no noise, and the speedo needle very steady at all speeds.

Good Luck!
