copper shaviings 103 engine

Washed the car today....and heard a slight ticking sound from the engine...

i take off the air filter cover , rev the engine and the ticking sound gets louder with the engine.

Coming from the water pump area, but pump not leaking. Doesn't seem like any pulleys are a problem either...

anyway....between the fan and the fan bearing bracket near the water pump... i see Copper shavings the consistency of a small Brillo pad... the engine is too hot now...but i will get my hands down there and see if i can pull out the copper "brillo" pad

i don't know if i can post a direct picture however, unless someone give me a heads up.

Look real close at all the rotating assemblies on the front of the engine. You may want to remove the belt and fell all the pulleys too. Something sounds amiss.

there's a wire that is hooked to a module just above the ezl on the front driver's fender.... it's hooked to the module that has a black plastic screw on cap. I think this might be the camshaft position sensor.

that wire snakes down to where the problem seems to be.... like it's hitting a rotating engine part.

got the copper shavings...

i don't think it's any of the pulley's

It could be a failing fan clutch bearing.

1> can't spin the pulley... i think the pulley is hitting ever so slightly against whatever that thing that turns is... we used to set timing marks against it.

2---It could be a failing fan clutch bearing..

I think it's the slightest beginning of a failing fan clutch bearing....

I happen to have a new one in the parts pin.... since this is a job we have to do when our cars get up there..

doesn't explain the copper shavings however

I think tomorrow, I will pull everything and put a new fan clutch bearing bracket on..... i hate that job...but happy that i have the part...

this engine only has 109k on it.....but the 300ce is mint and it's a keeper.

I guess i will keep everyone posted.... i am looking at a 3 to 3 1/2 hour job

Fan clutch bearing "bracket" all the way. When the bearing bracket usually fails you will find that the "bearing" has been pushed back all the way allowing the pulley to rub and whatever else.

Should only be a 30 minute job for fan clutch. What do think will take you 3 hours?

Don't drive the car if its the bracket assembly -- if the fan clutch sheers off you are looking at a minimum fan clutch, bracket and radiator. Get the bracket off asap!

You don't need to release the belt tensioner. Use a tool described here:

Put it all back together... solved the fan bearing bracket issue....

no more scraping from the fan pulley..

I guess I would have never figured there were two issues: the scraping...and another sound... well i am thinking bearings in the water pump...... no leak...and the water pump pulley isn't wobbly or anything.

i took off the belt and the engine runs with no noise....

Well, I don't have a spare water pump in the parts bin...so that kind of stinks...

now i am thinking it is not a water pump, but the camshaft position sensor...

have a rough idle....and that's the area where the copper shavings were coming from
