102 engine service details
Hi, All
I drive a 1993 200E (European) W124 sedan. I need to verify the timing chain and related hardware as part of my 'restoration' of this vehicle. Can someone please supply me with the service intervals at which the chain should (have) be(en) checked / replaced ? The car has 213 000 km (133 000 odd miles) on the odo. I do not have any previous experience on this engine, but I can say that I do not have a noisy timing chain AFAIK. Does this engine have the dual chain ? If not, can it be converted to the dual chain ? Engine # is 10296360137084 FWIW. TIA for any info / advice L |

Hi
o you have the M102 - single OHC 8 valve engine, or the M111 DOHC 16V engine? For European cars the M102 had a single chain, that tends to last 100,000 miles or so but gets noisy. I'm told that the double chain fitted to the 16v M111 engine lasts longer. Barry W124 94 E200 Wagon M111 engine 103K miles used to have a 87 200T wagon M102 engine 150k miles. |

judging from the engine #, it's M102. I can see only a narrow head, so it's definitely not the twin cam 16V as in the 190 2.x series.
Single chain, 100 000 miles (160 000 km) points to me to a new one sometime soon. Thanks, Bazzman. L |

I've owned a few of these M102 engines myself, all driven to over 300,000 kilometers (my 87 190E 2.3 is now owned by a friend of mine that's at 500,000).
I changed the timing chains between 160,000 and 200,000 kilometers. None were stretched enough to warrant replacement, but it's inexpensive, and gives peace-of-mind. If I were you, I'd change the chain and tensioner.
