Question New brakes

77 280se: replaced front Ate discs & pads. The brakes work very well but run hot. Caliper pistons are fully retracted but the new pads and disc are very tight! How long is the break in period for new pads?

Mine got better after a week, then I left town. still feel good now.

My car is a 1992 300CE though. Btu I got the ATE pads and rotors too.

Brake Dust after a week was not that bad either.

prtrask,

Are you saying that you had a hard time getting the caliper back on over the new pads and rotor after pressing the piston all the way in? Sounds to me like something may be wrong. There has to be some clearance in there for the new parts to swell when heated. If there is no mechanical clearance, it will get jammed up and make even more heat until something galls or sticks.

I just did mine with Balo rotors and Textar pads and everything went fine. There was plenty of clearance going back together. Nothing was tight, nothing got hot. If you're sure you have the right parts, you might want to have .5mm or so machined off of the friction surface to give you some clearance.
