W140 glass moonroof into W126
Hey guys,
Had a bit of a revelation the other day... read up on W126 and W140 interchangeable parts, as my sunroof has been defunct for quite a while... Rails, arms and seal are interchangeable. Now, while that seems fine and dandy, I measured my steel panel up against a W140s... Exactly the same size-- Just under 37.5" by 20.125". Based on this, along with arm, rail and seal interchange, the panel should be as well! I bought a used assembly out of a junked S500 for $150 bucks. comes with the whole cartridge. My only worry is that the sunscreen won't work, as the W126 lower rail may be different? I haven't had any concrete proof yet. I pick up the assembly tomorrow, and am going to try to bang it out all day. Obviously going to let you W126ers how it goes! We all may be rolling with glass panels soon! -Carlen

Wow. Very cool. I noticed that with a metal panel I rarely use my moonroof. The glass ones "remind" me I have the dang thing.
The flip side is that parts for W126 could get hard to come by or expensive, making a swap economical also. And... PICS!!

I'm hoping this is going to work, as the two main impetus are that: -New arms from the dealer are ~$450 a side -Glass. Moon. Roof. I really want this to work, and my indy wants to see it happen too. worst case scenario with fitment is I have to drop the headliner and just bolt the whole thing in. But rails are exactly the same size and width, so I shouldn't have that problem I also have a new phone with a ridiculous camera in it (takes 1080p HD video, let alone pictures ) so we are in for a veeeeery interesting ride! Also noticed the glass roof arms are a little different in design because they don't have to drag the headliner with it, but otherwise the steely arms are the same. I suspect no issues from this I am so giddy it's embarassing; I want it to be tomorrow NOW!

It's tomorrow now! I'd love to do this to a w124... they its a straight bolt-on job too with the w210 moonroof. I guess they carried over the parts for the next gen... nice!

Measure your panel and I'll measure our W210! Dunno about this continuity, but anything is possible now!

Alright guys...
First step is to remove your W126 panel from the car. My lift arms are broken, so I am not able to do it the conventional method of the 3/4 open way and unbolting it and the rails. I just unbolted the eight 8mm bolts from the panel, twisted a bit and voila, no more panel. Second step is to unscrew the rails from the body of the car. Silver in color, and have 5 phillips head screws and 1 flat head screw in it. Do NOT touch the flat head, as it is a vertical adjustment for the leading edge of the roof in the closed position. Third step is to remove the arms. Again, my arms were essentially shattered, as well as my drip rail, so I just had bits to remove. There is a bit of finagling to do to get it out conventionally, however, as there are tons of tracks and nubs that slide in said tracks. Pic 1 is the W140 cartridge itself. Pic 2 is of a mounting bracket on the cartridge itself, confirming W126 to W140 compatibility if you're doing a full cartridge exchange. Pic 3 is a comparison of the rails on a W140 (bottom) and a W126 (top). W126 rail is actually two parts, and I'm having some catching on the W140 rail, so I may switch back to the W126 rail to see if it clears that up.

4th step would be the debridement of the rails and area. I neglected to do so, as I don't have any of the sunroof paste, but my indy is letting me have some as a reward for this feat
5th would be to install the rear portion of the arm, which separates via a little white pin. This is easily the hardest step aside from acquisition of the cartridge, as you really need to angle it in perfectly with your hands, and not your eyes... I couldn't tell you if there's a trick or not, as I wasn't able to figure it out if there's an easier way. Next, Install the front portion of the rail by aligning the aforementioned pin and the little felt nubs into their track at the same time, or it won't work. Pic 1 is the two panels in comparison, W126 left and W140 right. Pic 2 is the same two panels, showing the up close difference between the two. On first sight was disheartening, but after looking at what I was working with I was fine! Pic 3 is the installed new arms and rail.

Last thing is to connect the arms to the transfer bridge, and then bolt in the sunroof panel!
Any questions or specific pics, don't hesitate to ask!
