Your viscous fan cuts in at 105°c & your aux fan at 120°c, that's where the problem lies I believe. So a lower dual temp switch that turns the fans on sooner would be the solution.

A mechanical fan that spins with engine does not make sense to me. Fan spins at high engine rpm when cruising on the freeway, but you don't need it. But when idling or in stop & go traffic when you need it the most, the fan spins at low rpm.

Also you'll loose some power & gas mileage.

These are the switching points in the cooling system. The viscous fan fires at 97 and the aux fan at 107 not 120.

I know this is a W124 thread, but he has a W201 1990 2.6 & it uses this (0065456124) 105/120 temp fan switch.

I know. The correct 201 factory switching points are in the last column. 105/100. 105/120 does not sound right even for a MB part number. If this is the one in the car then you're right, turf it and get the 105/100.

Imagine how hard and long the fan is working to drag it down from 120 to 105.

Hmm, I can't confirm that. But I just did a quick check in the W201 service manual, the wiring diagram for a 1988 2.6 shows a 105/115 switch is used. But for a 1990 2.6, I can't seem to locate any temp switch on the wiring diagram.

That is MB part number, ********A* uses MB Part# in their catalog. When I need a MB part#, I go to their site to get it. Because I don't live in the USA, so can't sign up for the free EPC.

Where are you anyway? I do the same with ********. I'm sure someone will come in with the info but 120 or even 115 seems high for this application...

I updated my info.

I don't want to sideline this thread.

Agreed, even with my dual 100-95°c (clutch fan) & 107-97°c (aux fan) temp/fan switch I think is too high. On a hot summer day with A/C on & stop/go traffic, I find the electro magnetic clutch fan comes on too late & is not effective to bring down the coolant temp at this point, before you know it..the temp on the gauge climbs to 110-115+°c. I don't like it.

With the NEW dual 91-86°c (clutch fan) & 99-94°c (aux fan) temp/fan switch I just installed, with car idling & A/C on...my temp gauge shows 85-95°c (never when above 100°c, bc my aux fan never came on, only my clutch fan was on).

Same as mine. Always halfway between 80 and and the next hash mark and the aux fans never fire.

My Aux fans do kick in and the high speed kicks in at 105%. The VFC does not roar nor do I ever hear it engage and make that roaoring sound that I've heard on other vehicles of the same series. But it is very tight when I shut it off so it is spinning but probably not getting tight enough to spin faster.

Replace the clutch.

When the gauge in my TE indicates half way between 80 and the next hash mark, the thermostat is fully open and the temp is about 87. That is where about it stays in all conditions.

I believe Mr Dalton. I hope he does not mind me quoting his PM.

The 100C mark is Factory Test Indicator mark used in testing preocedure of both gauge and sensor for specification accuracy.
The sensor/gauge test procedure is to sub. a 38 ohm resistance in place of the sensor. The gauge will then align with the 100C indicator marking.

I used two 82ohms in parallel, the resultant resistance is 41ohms. As you can see in the pic, it's almost right on 100°C. Thumbsup to A Dalton!

I decided to take a pic of my two temp/fan switch setup as well. The switch closest to the thermo housing is the NEW 91/99 switch & the original 100/110 switch is next to the new switch.

OMG!!! I took out my fan clutch and took it back to the parts dealer that I bought it from to exchange out under warranty. When the newer clutch was a different model number, I questioned why. The counter person checked the book and told me I was sold a "diesel" fan clutch and the gas fan clutch was $60.00 more!!! When I compared them, they physically looked the same but the associate told me that a diesel fan clutch will not engage at the same temps and it is designed to turn and function in a counter-clockwise direction. I put the new one in and as soon as the temp started to rise, I could hear it kick in and the gauge immediately started to drop. I am furious!!! What recourse do I have because I smoked an engine because of this and went through 3 fan blades.

Always double check part numbers and fitment yourself, never trust a "guy" at the parts counter.
