1989 300 SE /Trans. Auxiliary Pump Removal

Question for the experts:

I own a 1989 300 SE with 50k miles. Car is in excellent condition but I now have a big leak from the transmission's auxiliary pump.
Some local MB mechanics have stated that removing the pump all together is recommended as it really does not serve much purpose. Do you agree ? Comments ?

Second question is related to its removal; a mechanic has informed me that he needs to bring the transmission " down " in order to remove the pump; another mechanic states it is not necessary !!! who wins the contest ?

Thank you for your time and sharing your expertise.

Jorge

Remove the pump? Go to a new mechanic.

Fix the leak, the pump just needs to be resealed, but unfortunately it does require complete removal. Sounds like both of those mechanics have no clue about the transmission at all.
