Broken spring!

While changing the brake pads today I noticed this broken spring on the front left side of my 82 240D. Yikes! The tire has been wearing unevenly on that side with more wear on the outboard edge. Could the spring be causing this? I know that the car needs a front end overhaul anyway as the upper and lower control arm bushings are shot and the tie rod balljoint boots are torn. There doesn't seem to be any play in the ball joints as of yet.
