Engine cut out on acceleration

I have a 1999 CLK430 and I had a experience that was strange. I turned a corner at a slow speed and then put the pedal down and started to accelerate and all of sudden I lost power it did not shut off completly but I had to ease of the pedal and start again. It took me by surprise. It seemed to downshift to first when thjis happened.

thanks
Joe
