Headlight Doors & Grille

Yeah, I was wanting to know what the color of the grille was initially on the 80's & 90's mercedes'? All the ones I have owned it looks to be kind of a crystally silver. I didn't know if they had faded-out or not?? I just replaced a broken headlight, and installed new headlight doors. Was wanting to possibly go for painting the grill & installing a new emblem then.
