300 CE 1990 (M103) Wont start untill cold

Hi guys,

I'm asking your help in regard to the above. The car will start cold great with no issues. As soon as it is shut off it wont restart for an hour or so - bassically untill it is completely cold. It can run for several minutes or an hour, but after shutting down, the no restart occurs. It is predictable, nearly every time this happens.

Has had a new OVP recently because of other issues.

When the car runs it runs as if there is no problems.

Any help regarding possible solutions, or methods of testing possible culprits would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Hot start problems in a CIS system as described are caused by a fuel pressure drop.
In this case its caused by a old and leaky fuel accumulator ,simply replace this and all the hot starts will be perfect with no waiting.

The fuel accumulator is mounted next to the fuel pump and fuel filter . At one cend connecting to the fuel system andd at the opposite end will be a vaccuam pipe connection. leaked fuel accumulates here as you will be able to check.

If no spark could also be the crank position sensor. At least it was in my case with exact same symptoms. Could run for ten minutes or an hour depending on ambient temperature?

Easiest way to check is when dead cold, test the sensor at the ezl. I'm betting you have a low reading of around 500/600 ohms. Start up and when it stops test the sensor again - if no reading the sensor is dying. If the sensor is good you'll have a reading of 800/1200 ohms. My experience with a bad accumulator is always having two shots at starting when hot.

Does it start to misfire and then die when hot? Mine did that and would not start again until an hour or more of cooling. It was the distributor rotor arm.

Good luck.
