Viper Car Alarm...causing havoc?

Just an update for all of you tuned into my now 2 week issue of not being able to fire up the Benz without a jump to the coil.

previous owner had a car alarm "professionally" installed in this baby. I ignored this fact until yesterday when I began to wonder if these things can cause a voltage drop in the ignition system......nah, right?

So I called the Viper ech support guy...he says no... they just interrup the starter....since my starter works, I'm guessing I'm on the wrong track. But...what do you all think about this? Are they strictly a shutdown mechanism of the starter itself or can they drain the 12volts when the starter is engaged? Or something similar....

Also, he told me that he heard about the transmission interlock switch doing something similar when going bad on cars. Another thing to wonder about.

Any comments re this? I'm all EARS!! Thanks, Dan

First, I have never seen an interlock switch cause an ignition problem. As far as the Viper, If (and I mean IF) the viper was hooked up correctly, then It shouldn't cause an ignition problem either. How ever I have seen some real butcher jobs done by "Experts". I have removed many of them to fix various and assorted problems.

I don't have enough information to help any more than this.

No. It's just a relay that interrupts power to the starter. It does not add current, or alter anything other than that. It's not possible for it to cause a draw. It simply disconnects the starter from the keyswitch, nothing else.

If the vehicle only fires when you put power to the coil I suspect you have a bad ignition switch or relay to control it.

Many thanks, to all. Hope to help someone here soon, but won't offer suggestions to problems until I know what I'm doing.

My 2 week old starting problem turned out to be poor ground contacts on LH fender...2 brown wires under coil bracket. Did a systematic diagnostic process step by step and with lots of help from many of you, was able to isolate this problem to within a few feet of wires between coil and ignition switch. Glad it's running again! Thanks, Dan
