w126 500SEL distributor cap

So my cars been running rough and i looked at the rotor arm inside the cap and it looked pretty bad. I went to a pickit pullit yard and unfortunately all of the w126 first gen v8 cars had all of the rotors and cap assemblies take. I did manage to find an assembly from a 1988 second gen 420SEL. I know the assembly on this setup is much bigger but i think it will fit and for $10 I thought I might as well get it. So anyone out there know if the second gen style rotor and cap would be able to be used on a first gen car?

i don't know which cap and rotor you have. never seen a 500sel, but i know the 86 up caps, etc. are far bigger than the 81-85 here in the u.s. and will never fit. totally different ignition system. good luck, chuck.

A new bosch rotor is $15 and the cap is $40. Don't waste your time with used parts here.

I've had distributor misery and the only real solution was genuine MB cap and rotor. I've got Beru wires and non-resistor plugs and that setup gives me confidence.

I would urge against anything non-standard and cheap. Yes, I know it's easy for me to spend your money but those parts are critical and, certainly in the case of my 300CE-24, they live in a hot and hostile environment. My cheap replacement rotor lasted less than 18 months and failed and left me stranded for 2 hours while it cooled down. Genuine MB solved the problem.
