2005 SLK 350 CODE u0101....LOST COMM. with TCM

Car threw this code U0101, car will not shift from 1st gear. It really thuds into any gear when you move it from park to reverse or drive. In the instrument cluster it doesn't show what gear the car is in since this happened. Is this just a recoding issue or has a specific part failed?
