M116/W126 Exhaust Manifolds

I would like to have pictures, drawings, or verifiable descriptions of US SPEC '81-'83 380 SE/SEL (W126) exhaust manifolds. I have an old aftermarket exhaust parts catalog that indicates the possibility of rear exit logs with the crossover pipe being under the trans. Although there is much talk on various forums about "Euro" manifolds, I have yet to see any information (especially pics) of the earliest US M116/W126 manifolds.

Any info on this matter would be appreciated.

Frank

Thanks much "Dr. S"; those drawings and pics do tend to confirm the common wisdom that dual outlet configurations were supplied only outside the US.

Euro dual logs are around if you look around and ask. I picked up the set for my M117 5.6L for $100. Judging by how pathetic the factory exhaust is on the US M116 3.8L (and the M117 5.0L), I would expect a large jump in power with a full dual system.

I would grab the muffler and resonator section off a second generation car, 420/560. Install the true dual manifolds with downpipes, and hook it all together. Running a cat is up to you, if you are exempt skip it. If you need one, Magnaflow makes a nice dual 2" in and dual 2" out with an integral O2 bung... they are about $100 last I looked.

Do not forget you can scrap your OE cats for large money currently and would probably offset the cost of the retrofit big time. :) This is my plan with my 560, but to retain the OE cat until exempt.

I just diuscovered that the entire exhaust system of my 91 350SDL needs to be replaced.

This was made very clear when 1/3 of it fell off on the freeway!

So.....where's a good place to buy it?

I have not yet called phil, but the indie who does work for me on exhausts says he can't get the system.

Any suggestions?

I still have to call Phil but the West Coast is still sleeping now.

Looking yesterday, when I thought I just needed a resonator at the back, PeachParts offered that, I checked before I called my indie and drove the car over.

Would like to get back on the road soon.

Post-script: Phil is still digging.

? Relevancy

What is the relationship of failed diesel exhaust components to
M116 manifolds? Why are the two preceeding post in this thread?

No clue, hopefully my post helps.

I just scrapped the original cats a couple weeks ago off my 420, the original pre-cat and full main cat, only got $152 for them at the local recycler....The replacement system was $262 or so, so it did offset a lot of it, but certainly not all. I noticed a considerable improvement in both sound and power with the single large pipe + small flow through cat setup vs. the original. As the car can hit 90-100mph on a freeway onramp, I am not complaining! :D

Also I went the legal and earth friendly(er) route and used a cat. Not using one is just irresponsible.
