W140 no start
Hey everyone,
I'm writting this post as I'm stranded on a gas station. The car 1997 S500 (200000miles) cranks - turns over, but doesn't run. I have a spark, I had a spare (new) cranksshaft sensor - I changed it (it is the simple 2 connector - but not adjustable - 2nd gen of M119 no distributors) I;ve checked the operation of the camshaft sensor (just with a basic multimeter). Seems to be OK. Car runned great - cold start, 1 mile to the gas station, started right up. I put another 60 miles on the car. Turned it off after returning to the car it won't start - the first time it had a tendency to run, but stalled after 1s. Since than it's just cranking and cranking but not running. I tried to spray some start fluid, it only runs for the duration of a 1s - but that comfirms the spark (no problem with DAS alarm system). Could it be just a silly fuel filter? I checked the fuel pump it is running fine - I don't have my pressure tester with me (, but what should be the pressure value for this car?) I have a 12V on one of the injector wires with the ignition. I don't have any other tools with me to check for pulse - osciloscope. Is there a relay / fuse for the computer? Location? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Mark. |

thanx
Thank you for your quick reply,
Unfortunately I don't have an excess to an LED. There is only a small convenience store. They don't even have an LED brake light I could take appart... Thank you. M#. |

update
I got the car towed, they changed the fuel pump. Now the engine feels like it wants to run by it self while cranking, but never catches and immediately stalls.
Hard to explain. Before the fuel pump change the engine didn't show any singns (willingnes) to run. What to go after next? Thank you for any advice. |

still chasing the problem
The shop was able to start the car this morning (cold start). I t runned for onne minute and stalled.
They're checking the wwiring to the ECU. Is there any known area where these cars had issue with the wiring? (I can't think of anything). It's the second gen. , soo the engine wirring should be bulletproof... I'm puzzelled. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you! |

Now the ECU & prices
Thank you for the breather hose advise - I did actually replaced it not too long ago. I'll check the other parts.
So, the people at the shop are not very communicative -- at all. ![]() They changed the fuel pump and filter - car didn't start, first they gave me an excuse that it needs a new relay and they need to order it - it will be in the next day (I spend a night at a local motel). The next day - more problems: after confirmation of the ECU ("we're not getting a negative pulse at the injectors") a whole new set of problems arises: I paid over 850 for their experiment - let's throw a part at it - fuel pump (and 130 for a less than six mile tow to their shop with THEIR flatbed). Now: they were able to find an used ECU - an exact plug in replacement. Than, it got delayed, only to suddenly magically appear (30 min) - but it has to be flashed at the dealer... I really don't feel there was anything wrong with the fuel pump, nor I have hard time believing that they were able to start the car after the fuel pump replacement (followed by stalling)... Nobody from the shop calls back as they promise - unless I call them. Of course I don't have anything in writing, everything is verbal. This is new to me, the car has never been in shop before - I do all work myself. a) Any honest shop owners here that can provide some input? Do you think it's worth fighting for the fact that the fuel pump was not needed to be replaced - they should have checked for injectors pulse first? (Needless to say the shop is saying: "ahhhh, the fuel pump was bad ALSO and had to be replaced"). b) Is 850 a fair price for a fuel pump+filter change? c) How much is fair price for an used, flashed ECU replacement and install? I'm beating my head against wall - why didn't I just tow it home??? Thank you all of guys. M#. |
