Wait until you get into the 2000's models with air suspension.
The parts for those are mind numbing prices.

duxthe1 08-14-2012 08:32 PM

.....Or the ABC cars, those guys would love a 500$ shock.

ps2cho 08-14-2012 08:37 PM

Unless they are leaking, the rear "shocks" generally are good. Why do you think they need to be replaced?

And yes, that is the correct cost. $400-500/each.

You know, I'm guilty of having a similar reaction when I price things for my car but I have to step back and remind myself that I am driving a world class automobile (ok, of another era, but still!), the car is nice looking and essentially rust-free, it just works as it is needed plus there are NO car payments to be making each and every month. So, for me, I don't think it's appropriated to get too upset when something does need to be repaired or replaced, after all, it is a man-made object susceptible to friction and other forces of nature.

When I look around and try to find other 1995 daily-drivers, there simply isn't many out there. We, however, use our car just like the people up the street driving a new Kia or Hunday (don't know how to spell it properly!) and I wonder from time to time where those cars will be when they are 17 years old. Just my thoughts on the matter, FWIW :D

PS: If you haven't already, do a search on the subject, you might be surprised to find that they are not in need of replacement. I don't know.

Just think, the 1%er's don't bat an eye when they take that SLS in to the dealer for service. This one was on the showroom floor at the MB dealer. List was $123k but it was just an SL550.

The price is probably correct, but they are basically bullet proof. Problems are typically with other components or adjustment. The 123 wagons most common problem was a clamp on a lever that actuated the control valve slipping on the sway bar. That's how durable they were. I expect the 124 wagons to be equally durable.

What symptom leads you to believe that you need the dampers?

You're definitely right about that. My brother in law is a diagnostic tech at a HUGE MB dealer in the DFW mid cities area. He has met a number of Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks ball players with high end MB's. He says they pay a multithousand dollar repair bill with no questions asked. I'm sure there are plenty of non athletes with the same repair attitude and similar incomes.

The shop he works in is cleaner, nicer and fancier than some banks you might go into. Air conditioned, beautiful tile floor, on and on.
