I was inspecting my car today while having my mech refil my AC, and I noticed my rear wheels seem to have some toe in on the front of them.

I have had this rotational noise in my car in the rear for a little while, and when I noticed this I asked him, and he told me it is adjustable.

As soon as I got home, I looked it up in my service CD, and low and behold there is a toe in adjustment.

Looks like I'll be going in for a 4 wheel alignment this week to get it taken care of. It was quite a shock to notice the wheels turned in on the rear slightly. I can understand camber, but I never knew the benz had toe in.

I think it's for straight line stability, otherwise the car tracks left and right of its own accord on straight roads

We just aligned a 99 E320 in the shop and I was amazed that it didn't even list specs for rear camber. Camber is totally nonadjustable in the rear on that car but toe is. Kind of surprised me as a lot of Jap cars and even some domestics have rear camber adjustment.

Basicly ALL MB's with multi-link suspensions have adjustable rear toe-in. & unless something is bent the camber never should need adjusted.

I am going to get the alignment done asap. if I had noticed this instead of througouhly checking suspension bushings and such, and blaming the tires, I would have done the alignment sooner. I only noticed it when I was shooting the perverbial ***** with my mech when we were recharging the AC.

I asked him, "does it look like my rear wheels are pointing inwards at the front?" He told me about the toe in, and after inspecting I noticed it was pointing a bit in. probably morenoticeable since the springs were installed.

For anyone with a rear rotational noise or excessive wear on the outsides of the tires or feathering of the tires, I would suggest a good 4 wheel alignment. your MB dealer should be able to do it for around $100.

I'll keep you posted as to how it turns out for me.

So does anyone know whether the rear suspension on 123s is adjustable? I had my car aligned recently and I remember the rear-end being a little off. If it isn't adjustable, are there any rear suspension parts that typically wear out and cause alignment problems?

if the car sits lower with the new springs, then this is to be expected.

as the car rolls when making a turn, the outer suspension compresses, and the toe-link arm is there to toe-in the outer rear wheel, to prevent oversteer.

but also remember that the front track is slightly wider than the rear, so this could also be giving you an illusion of exaggerated rear toe-in (i.e., more than what is really there)

The toe in is the front rear adjustment. too much and the wheels point inwards at the front.

The camber, top bottom is what lowering affects, I thought lowering did nto affect toe as much as it did camber.

My camber is ok, the toe is a problem. a good 4 wheel alignment done to mb specs should fix that issue. if the camber is a problem afterwards, only solution is a camber correction kit.
