1995 S320 Transmission- no forward or reverse

Please help. I have 1995 S320 with 210K miles. Transmission was rebuilt 80K miles ago at 130K miles. Now not sure if this was transmission. I drove to work like normal. When, I am going to lunch, the care won't move either forward or in reverse. It just sit there,no transmission engagement. I checked under car if the linkage loose. The linkage is still in tact.
There is no warning sign or anything.
I called few shop. They all sais they have to diagnosis and in worst scenerio it will be $3,000.
I don't know if it is worth to fix it. Car was running great, did not used oil.

Anyone knows if it is something simple?
Transmission fluid was OK and at level. I added additive to prevent slip a month ago and it was sticky additive.

Hmm...unfortunately the additive is probably what did your tranny in....even if they tout "safe" for all transmissions. It's supposed to make worn friction disc stick and engage to eek out a little more life outta a worn transmission. If it was rebuilt 80k....it actually may have worn those friction disc out faster...causing the friction pad particles to clog up your transmission.
These transmission (well any transmission) are very sensitive to the fluid type and quantity. What did you additive did you use by the way (i used Lucas oil in a failing slipping Honda Civic tranny...helped it out for about 4-5months before it went belly up). Was yours slipping?? I'd flush the transmission out, replace filter and gasket (my e320 95 takes DEX III...although people do have other preferences). Let us know what happens.

Chinda,

My best guess since you lost ALL gears, and you have no whine; I'm assuming fluid and filter are okay too?

I think the gear selector shaft broke, strip, or fell out?? The screw clamping the gear shaft could have broke, or unscrewed it self-out.

Okay, download the PDF on post 13 of this thread.

722,5 tear down which side to start from

Now, the transmission on the thread above is a 722.5, but I think you have 722.3xx or 722.4xx. The part is very similar in operation on your transmission.

Look on page seven:

The screw that can cause your problem is 333 if it malfunctions(lose or breaks)

The shaft, though hard to break, but not impossible to strip on the ends (330), yet 339 and 332 will con tribute to the problem on 330.

If 347 falls off 332 it is bad too.

Okay, lots of numbers! I'd drain the pan. Pull the filter off(unscrew the two screws). Locate the location where the shifter shaft plugs-in, and look next to the valve body. You may see the parts. I think this your problem since nothing works?

Martin
