Have rust spots in the undercarriage taken care of have the rear suspension checked out Get a second set of rims for my winter tires Have the loose windshield/roof trim pieces taken care of. Is this enough?? |
OK For my W123 300D I need to
Build car port so I can weld in the dry! Build English Wheel so I can get a decent smooth curve in the floor pan I'm making Make up some hammer forms for the more intricate shapes Make the floor pan section out of zincor Make up some repair pieces and weld them into the front of the car on the firewall and front inner wings and a bit on the right hand bonnet spring pocket Remove rear wings / fenders Remove rear wheel arches Either repair rear wheel arches or make up some new ones Put in a new electric supply line so I can use that spot welder! Weld in new / repaired wheel arches Figure out what the heck I'm going to do with that little bit of irritating rust in the spare wheel well Weld the rear wings / fenders back on (I've got a new one for the right hand side) Cut out the old floor pan and weld in the new one Cut out the sills on both sides and replace them Remove the last bits of underseal Straighten out the rear valance Spot weld in new floor pieces in the boot Probably make my own car rotisserie so I can work on the underside with ease Seam sealer! Spray the underside of the car in POR15 (or something like it) then a colour coat then a clear undercoat so I can see if the rust comes back Strip off last year's new paint (I didn't get a clear coat on it in time so it is probably damp) Repaint the car Make up a new wiring loom ... If I get this far by Christmas I'll be a happy man! EDIT - fat chance |

At 272K mi the White Whale really needs the whole front end rebuilt. Problem is those 4-matic parts are spendy. Maybe next year's tax return....
With the turbo mostly sorted, there's no major work pending there. I've got some spare rear leveling parts and I've been wanting to add a 2nd control valve and set it up so that I have hydraulic sway control in the rear. |

My to do list... hmmm this is going to be a long one....
On the 85 Euro TDT 1. replace the crappy tires. 95% tread left and new and already a broken belt, and 2 are washborded (from front suspension which is now new). 2. repaint correctly 3. repair a few spots in the interior leather. 4. Other standard maintenance. Been driving the car everyday and it's been great. but over 10k on it in the last 8 months. On the 99 E320 wagon (wife's) 1. She's informed me that it needs to be repainted and a few things repaired like a cracked rear bumper skin. 2. Car needs a new blower motor. I have the cover off right now and you can give it a tap and it will work. (brushes) 3. Head Liner. On my 87 300D 1. finish head job. (in the works) 2. drive it and see what it needs. I did a lot of work to it before the head issue, but car has been sitting 2 years now. On the 94 E320 1. Drop Trans and fix (Trans is got 1 bolt left holding it in) 2. Tires 3. Fix some rust issues. (Por 15 and some body work needed.) 4. Headliner 5. Windshield 6. Have leather drivers seat repaired (standard wear and one tiny rip) 7. Whatever else it needs... 95 Land Rover discovery 1. Finish getting Om617 mated to the 5 speed. 2. Get 2 inch body lift and 3 inch regular lift (to help with oil pan clearance issues) 3. Get engine and trans back in... huge list there.... 4. Body and paint once tested 5. Nato Rims and new tires. Avoid buying any more cars until everything else is done. |
Just finished recovering the front seats new fresh leather, and the armrest.
Replaced the painted rear vent painted housing(on late model W140's) with the vinyl covered one(from early W140's). Replaced the side rubber mirror gaskets. The car is near perfectly restored. I just need a few little bolts here and there.. Martin |

w126 diesel replace radiator,or fiberglass repair.
w140 obtain jets and solinoids for 175 spray,go to dealer for PSE pump diagram, buy two newer front tires 215 60 16s. |
W123 326,000 miles:
Now/Soon: Repair crash damage (farmed out-done) Repaint (farmed out-done) Pick up from body shop (next week) Re-do LR wheel bearing preload with new crush spacer New/Rebuilt steering box W126 vented front brake upgrade Injector test/service as necessary (It didn't smoke when I got it. Then it started, and is slowly getting worse) Re-cover driver seat Repair filter housing oil leak For the future: Timing chain? Now at about 4 degrees of elongation by timing mark method. Change transmission fluid Get vacuum lock system working again Review requirements to pass tech for autocross-repair as needed to meet them, then do an autocross Bike 19,000 miles: Continue to follow manufacturer's PM schedule (easy) with an extra oil/filter change between dealer services (yes, I am lazy). Keep an eye on tire wear (rear is losing profile after 7000 miles but will probably go 3 or 4 thousand more. Front still looks great after 8000-actually very good for a sport bike.) Put in gas and ride. There is something to be said for keeping a <10 YO vehicle around. |
Welll..
Im still on the 420SEL's front end rebuild. The springs I used were originally for a 300sd spring replacement project that I never did...So I checked in the EPC and it said "yep compatible with all 126s" so I put them in.. They're far too tall for the 420SEL lol. So Wednesday I placed an order for two 126 321 17 04 springs.. Friday they came in..but only one was a 17..the other was stamped 18 04 and was notably thicker and slightly taller. So I was going to return it but at $30 shipping it didnt seem worth it. Since thats 50% of the cost of another spring. So I just bought yet another spring. So now Ill just be one spring shy of two front sets. LOL |
Well I can mark #1 off of the list, I got the car started today and it runs like new. However, need to find out WHY it happened.

If I suddenly became richer than Bill Gates, I still wouldn't buy a W140. I'd be throwing away money at a Ferrari, but I'd still keep the W123 diesel.
