Did you try with the wiper in the raised position? Pull out the key with the wipers about 45-degrees up. Should be much easier.

I bought the inserts from Phil, but they were $35 for the pair, not $18. When did you buy them? I bought mine early in '04. I think the new blades are about $75 apiece?
