Is fuel pump activated with ignition?

1988 190E 2.3
I think I have a fuel pump failure? The motor will not fire up...I undid the main fuel line feed into the fuel distributor and pulled it aside and then switched on the ignition but no gas was pumping through it, but i think it should...am I right?
