Procedure to replace the blower regulator on a 1997 Mercedes Benz E420
I looked under the kick panel and under the hood, but the regulator is not in an obvious location. If anyone knows, I would be grateful for your insight.
Many thanks

It is in between the glovebox and the kick panel of the passenger side. Access via kick panel, and remove the carbon filter. If you remove the glovebox, you will see the blower too. and the regulator is next to or attached to the blower motor. Every model differs a bit, but workable. Also, do not install any blower or regulator bought from ebay and made in China.

it is accessed from the kick panel above the passenger footwell. The blower and regulator both are accessed there. If the regulator is original it is the older style and is no longer made. You can either a) replace both the blower and regulator with the new style or b) buy a regulator for the W140 chassis and extend the wires, which is what I did.

OK so i bought this regulator which appears to be the only one available:
However, there is no way this will fit on my blower and the notes say i have to replace the blower fan also! I've seen ones from a W140 that looks closer to mine. The part number is 140 821 83 51 Will that work?

As my chassis number is prior to the update, and I appear to need a regulator, lets assume I go with the W140 unit and attempt the mod suggested in several threads.
Do I assume that the wires and their intended purpose is the same? DO I just connect Red to red, blue to blue, brown to brown, pink with alligators to the same pink with alligators? All posts are the same. use W140, make wires longer. Perhaps someone with experience here can state whether or not all the wires are the same and just connect by colour.

For those interested, here is a little more info that may help. My concern is still if the savings doing the W140 mod is worth it. The info in the thread below shows the wiring modded, but also states that there is no additional fan speed in the top two fan settings, but that fan performance was improved.
Would it be better to spend 2-3 times as much and get the new fan, reg, cover? Is air movement even better yet above the W140-mod solution? Here is a pic of the modded wiring, found in the thread listed below. Thanks to h769821 for providing info here: 96 W210 E320 climate control fan speed regulator

Replace the blower from a later model W210. They can be had cheaply from junk yards. Then you can buy an updated regulator. There is an adapter for the wiring that can be bought for about $20.

Al, I think I need to buy a regulator for the heater. I am in Dallas. Would it be better to go the up dated regulator or the old style? How do I get in touch?
