91 Mercedes 300E

What does it mean if there is gray sludge in the water reservoir on a 91 mercedes 300E? Oil is NOT milky.

If you mean the coolant reservoir then it probably is oil. It gets milky when it mixes with coolant, but if it sits long enough, it will separate. (In to grayish black sludge)

It will likely need a head gasket

That's what it is, I just went through the same thing and had to change heads and head gasket.
