Question 88' 300e won't start

Need help! I have an 88' 300e and I'm having a hard time getting it started. It will turn like it want's to start but does not. It coughs around the air filter. I left my niece use the car and I believe she ran it low on fuel. Where should I start. I drove it home because she messed it up(brakes are gone) and pissed me off. It has 223,000 miles on it and was running fine when I initially let her use it this past summer. She treated it like a truck!
The ball joints, shocks, struts and strut mounts need replacing! Tires too! I opened the hood and found that the power steering pump cover is missing! I paid $800 for the car, spent about 500 and it was a functional daily driver.
Should I fix it or move on?

Hey Jc,
First you should determine if Its lacking fuel or spark.
It's easy to determine which is missing. If you have basic
Skills. If not comfortable diagnosing get some one who is
Remove air cleaner, spray starting fluid for a couple seconds in the air flow meter
By pressing plate down. Attempt to start vehicle. Start there if it
Starts then dies you have fuel system failure.if it cranks and still won't
Start. Pull a spark plug wire from a plug insert a spark in end lay plug on a metal
Engine part have some crank engine over while you observe. Do you see spark or arc.
What happens when it wouldn start for her?

It is probably the idle control valve hoses. If they are rock solid its probably a vacuum leak.

As for the power steering, was there fluid left? If so, get a new filter and top it up immediately.

As for keeping the car...its up to you. At 220k, you probably need a complete rubber refresh. Expect $600-800 in parts for new lower control arms /w ball joints, tie rods, strut mounts, struts and tools.

88 300e won't start

Thanks for the information. Considering the amount of work that needs to be done. I think I'm going to let it go and find another. Considering I only paid $800 for it and it served me well.

jcd, before giving up on your 1988 300E check the condition of the distributor cap, distributor rotor and spark plugs. Recommend replacing the fuel filter also.
