Actually I did just find on the net that you can use Valvoline Maxxlife. But this is off the net I would use caution. BEST bet is the MB stuff.

look ...you only have to change it every 40k..... so you spend 80 dollars on fluid... what's the cost per mile vs spending 20 dollars on fluid? One fill up,,,,

Shell 134 is on the MB approved list, if you call Shell you can find a distributor in your area, perhaps only $5/qt.

Good luck.

Here's the link to see if there is a Shell Distributor in your area:

Distributor Locator - United States

One member at BW found it for about $3/Qt in a case quantity, so it's possible to get a great deal on it. But you do have to buy a case, which is fine, since you'll need between 8 and 9 quarts if you also drain the TC, which is easy on the 97.

Do not use Maxlife. It is not MB approved.

Shell 134 in our 722.6 and it works great.

The latest MB fluid is too thin for the 722.6's even though it is "backward compatible", so stick with Shell 134 since its tried and true.
