Im not an expert but it could be the vacuum modulator on your trans. I adjusted mine last week and now my shift points are soft but immediate. The modulator can also be checked with a vacuum pump to see if it holds a vacuum or not. do a search on the "vacuum modulator" you will find adjusting info there. However, It could also be that you are due for a trans fluid and filter change.
Good luck!

Mine had a new transmission only 4000 miles ago, and it does shift hard from 1st to 2nd, and I think it's the way they are. The auto specialist did, however, adjust the vacuum so that it would rev more and was less sluggish.. though I am not sure if this would have affected the shifts.

For what it's worth.

When I first got my '93 300E two years ago the 1st to 2nd gear shift was very abrupt. My mechanic adjusted it by tweaking something under the car. He had to adjust it several times over several visits but it eventually became as smooth as silk He said that it had to do with individual driving styles

At any rate, it worked and it's all that matters

If your 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are OK one should be carefull of too much modulator reduction. Harsh shifts are better than sloppy ones (from the transmissions view point).

I would make as much as one turn counterclockwise on the modulator key. I also would first be sure that you are not shifting too late into second. The adjustment is to the control pressure cable and has a thumb wheel that can be reached without removing the aircleaner. You should try and make the shift earlier which will require lengthening the cable. The 190 has a screwy adjustment that is hard to see what you are doing but is easy once you get it. Since it is easier and might offer the best solution I would go there first.
