Mine looks like W126's picture.
Nice cars.:) |
Rarest Color
Probably signal red. I've seen it 2-3 times on a 126, usually 86-91's.

560SEL
where did you get those clear tail lights? Ive been looking all over for them

1986 300 SDL (212,117)

SDL
Nice 300 SDL! Long daddy! I saw a nice 420 SDL the other day. Are these common? What is the diff btw 300 and 420 SDL???
|
What is the diff btw 300 and 420 SDL???
------------------------------------------------------------ There are some cosmo diff's - major would be engine size. Never had the opportunity to get up close and friendly with a 420 |
There is no 420 SLD, only a 420 SEL. There is both a 300 SDL and SEL. The difference between a 420SEL and a 300SDL is that the 420 is a 4.2L v-8 gas and the 300SDL is a 3L inline-6 diesel.

cross eyed
Maybe the guy messed with the badge!
I read 420 SDL but I would not doubt that it is not authentic. Car looked nice. |
126 chassis
Mine is a 1987 560 sec Looks exactly like his 1990 560 sec. I just had a new motor put in mine . I have been thinking of replacing the burlwood? with the carbon fiber look. What do you all think? Mark
|
I have one...
no pics yet... but it looks like jfsehl's sel. Same color, same great shape, except for stock alloy rims like on the old diesels, such as a 300sdl.
TX76513, what kind of rims are those? I might have to give up my idea for my American Racing wheels (see this post: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-benz-wheels-tires/65244-thinking-about-these-wheels.html?highlight=american+racing ) Thanks, |

Stock wheels - just shinney good ole Turtle Wax chrome cleaner. Something that you cannot see the L side has silver MB logo and the R side has gold MB logo's in center caps, and I don't know why - the previous owner took that secret to the grave with him. |

Here is my 1989 420 SEL. Installing euro lights on her later this week.

My 126 has Euros now...might as well show them off

fintail;
Beautiful color i love it and the euros add a new modern look |
It's DB355 by the way....'diamond blue'. I have seen very few in the same color.
I love how the lights look. I am sometimes mixed about the corners...I need to look for smoked ones rather than ones that are so 'white', maybe. But thy do look a lot more modern than stock ones. Here's a shot of the stock lights. I really notice how the plastic frame parts were aged. What an improvement http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...01_17_full.jpg |
I almost bought an SDL that same color a few years back. Sweeet color!
|
My '88 420 SEL
|
I have seen a few in the same color...mainly on ebay. One in real life. I saw a dark green 300SE today, that's an unusual color too.
Like the chrome wheels on that 420SEL. I'd like a nice set of those for my car, or a period aftermarket set like the Lorinsers on the parts thread that I was too late for. |

Here's a similar-looking 300 SE on a local Ford dealer's used lot ($2600 for anyone interested). http://images.getauto.com/vehicles/W...KA468770-2.jpg And a 560 SEC on the same lot for anyone interested (I have no connection with these guys, just some local 126s on the 'net). http://images.getauto.com/vehicles/W...HA339203-3.jpg Most of the 126s I see locally are blue, silver, gold, or red. |
That 300SE seems pretty cheap....what's wrong with it?
Most 126s here are gold or silver too. There's a red 300SD in my area, that seems unusual. |

If it's a good one, that is very cheap. It must be super high miles or bad title history or something. I see them bringing at least twice that today. I paid more than twice that for mine.
|
According to their listing, it has 199,660 miles. Here's the link:
http://www.getauto.com/autolinks_cardetail.html?x_dealer_id=AACQD&vinNum=WDBCA24DXKA468770 Now when this dealership was under old management, THEY SUCKED. I still see some of the same people there today as before, so it's likely not much has changed. It's also very possible that the car isn't even there anymore. Sort of a classic sleazy car dealership "come on" trick. The car's VIN is listed, WDBCA24DXKA468770. I ran a Carfax on my 420 SEL about a month ago and was thoroughly disappointed (their records only went back to 1991, whereas M-B's went back to the day it was delivered in October of 1987). I don't qualify for another Carfax refund, otherwise I'd run a check (they list 12 records as available). |
At that mileage, I guess it could go either way. Properly cared for, it might be a good car, but if it wasn't maintained, it could be a mess. And being sold by non-MB people, I am sure you'd get some funny stories about it. It doesn't look bad, though.
I've never done a carfax on my car. The car was one owner before me, and they kept every receipt. If it got crashed, they sure fixed it perfectly, and the owners kept no records of it. I'll risk it. Here's a lovely late 126 from ebay. It's my color, and the condition looks fantastic. Certainly worth it. |

That 560 SEL looks gorgeous!!!! |
The leather in that 300SE does look like it needs to be conditioned. A high pressure low class GM lot up here had a SEC virtually identical to the one you posted....220K miles, no history, and a big price.
Downtown LA Motors eh....that's where my 300SE was sold, back in May of 89. The previous owners were pretty obsessed/anal about it...I have every piece of paperwork - window sticker, all the little warranty pieces and explanatory sheets about the climate and cruise control, etc. I'll keep up that tradition. I saw another dark green 126 today, a 300SEL. It was very dirty and unkept looking. I can't see how people let such a car run down. |
Well, I went and had a look at the 300 SE and a closer look at the 560 SEC. They've both seen better days, a LOT better in the case of the 300 SE. The 300 SE had a broken antenna (physically broken off), the radio does not power up, some healthy corrosion on the left rear wheel well, the driver's window and passenger side rear window don't go all of the way up, the brake sensor light is active, the oil filler cap is cracked in half, numerous points of corrosion and oxidation all over the body, and numerous scratches from what appear to be keying. It did, however, start right off, though the idle was high (almost 1500 rpm). The little dingbat sales manager said he'd take $2300 (it was listed at $2600) and I countered with $1200. He came down to $1500 and I stuck to $1200 to which he replied, "The only way I could sell it at that price was if I wholesaled it at auction." I'm not sure if he knew that the salesman already told me that their plans were to send it to the dealer auction after the holidays. Knucklehead. The interior was actually not too bad. It appeared that the car had been mostly neglected. I figured if I could get it cheap enough, it might be a worthwhile tinkering project.
The 560 SEC needs upholstery work on the driver's seat. It's all split out on the seams and shows considerable wear. I also noticed what appears to be a repaired place on the passenger door around the rocker panel. At any rate, I only wound up wasting 30 minutes or so. |
I understand about all the short-comings on the 380SE...but isn't great that we live in a land where you can consider buying that car for only 1500. The broken antenna, broken oil cap, windows that don't go to the top are all minor diy type work (for me). The corrosion bothers me...but to own a saintly S Class for 1.5K...Wow! And another thing, I would think it would be wonderful, since you are in the Oklahoma City vicinity, to join the Mercedes-Benz Club of America (if you aren't already a member) and join us, your friends in Mercedes, at our monthly club meetings. Always the 3rd Tuesday of the month at some fine OKC restaurant. Lots of Mercedes talk and fun. That poor 380SE needs a rescuer!:)
|
Actually, it's a 300 SE, but I agree, most of what I saw were minor things. However, if the dealership is going to sell the car at auction for LESS than $1500, then why not sell it to me for that? They avoid the hassle of taking it to the auction and get their money a little sooner. I have a feeling I'll be hearing from them in the not too distant future.
No, I'm not a member of the M-B Club of America. I wasn't sure how active that they were, so I'll certainly consider joining. Thanks. |
I'd think that 300SE would be very much worth 1200-1500 if it is roadworthy. The rust would be the most worrisome thing. I have seen some rusty late 126s, but they mainly seem to go around the sunroof and back window, and wheelarches.
And as jfsehl says, that's a lot of car for such a pittance. I bet it could make a good project car. Or maybe I just feel kinda sorry for it. That beautiful 560SEL ended up at $12100. That's more than 95% of them go for nowadays, but it's sure a nice looking car. |

I've posted this one before. I've had it since Nov 17, 2003 and aleady I've replaced the front brakes, they were warped, the tie reds and now I need a new water pump. So I'll gather all the parts, hoses and radiator, a monovalve repair kit, and anything else I can think of, and get to work.

Very nice color on that 380SEL...looks like a beautiful car
Here's a pic I took yesterday, the 126 meeting with the fintail. Would have been a better shot if not so dark. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/fintail/meeting.jpg |
Yep, color is nice on the 380SEL. Only 51k miles. If I don't sell it, I will put clear corners, chrome rims and euro headlights, possibly clear tail lights and lowered suspension. Your W126 looks excellent and very well taken care of. Do you have any lighter pics
? |
I'd like to get a set of factory chromes or period aftermarket wheels for my 126 too...but I will wait until the tires wear out and then replace everything at once. There was once a set of cool period Lorinser 16" wheels shown on this site that I would like to have.
Thanks for the compliments on my car. It's not a 100 point mint car or anything...but I do take care of it. At 174K now, it isn't perfect...but it is better than most I see. It is DB355, a light blue. You don't see it too often. It was the color I wanted when I started looking for another car to replace my fintail as a daily driver. I still have the fintail, and the 126 is a great match for it. Here are a few pics...I am posting small versions, to not annoy anyone else reading this. Some pics are from before I put the Euros on it. http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...01_41_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...01_40_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...201_8_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...201_6_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...01_11_full.jpg You can see more pics of the cars here: http://members.cardomain.com/fintail |
finally took pics of mine today
|
fintail, very nice color when sun shines on it. BTW, how much dod you buy your euro headlights for?? I see some on ebay but they are bit expensive to me...
|
Nice 420 there too btw. It's encouraging to see so many people still caring for these cars. It tells a lot about how good the cars really are.
There's a 91 560SEL on the lot at the local MB dealer here...101K, pretty nice shape. It's kind of a champagne with a burgundy-ish interior though...does nothing for me. One could probably get it for $9K I paid maybe $225 for my lights, I think. They are Depo, not Bosch...they look to be of decent quality to me though. I do notice a different light pattern too, and they simply look so much better. |
$225 isnt a bad price. I guess its the name u r really paying for. Are you serious about that 560SEL selling for 9grand?? Here in NY where I live most 560SEL's go for around 5-7 grand, I would die for another 560SEL. I love the engine. SO powerful and its almost as big as my corvette engine but my Vette has much more power that the 560
|
The dealer actually wants $11K for it...but I am sure you could easily knock a couple grand off. It is a nice looking car...rust problems and cosmetic issues are rare where I am, and it appears to have been cared for...with one drawback that I recall....it had a tow hitch. I don't know if I want the potential abuse that could have happened from that.
I have no regrets about the Euros. It was worth the cost (and what ended up being a 4 hour install instead of the 1 hour I see claimed LOL) for the looks alone. The car looks 'right' now. |
I have a 500SEC in champagne duco with chocolate leather upholstery. I simply cannot imagine owning a better car.
